Veggiedent

What is Veggiedent®?

Veggiedent® is a brand of oral hygiene chews for dogs produced by the company C.E.T. (C.E.T.® VEGGIEDENT® FR3SH®, VEGGIEDENT® ZEN, VEGGIEDENT® FLEX). Oral hygiene chews are often recommended by veterinarians since the abrasive texture of the chews helps to prevent or delay the formation of dental plaque and calculus build-up on your pet’s teeth.

C.E.T. VEGGEIDENT® chews contain additional ingredients to help maintain your pet’s overall health.

  • C.E.T.® VEGGIEDENT® FR3SH® contains a prebiotic known to help support proper digestion.
  • VEGGIEDENT® ZEN contains L-theanine to help support your dog’s mental well-being.
  • VEGGIEDENT® FLEX contains BIOVAFLEX® eggshell membrane, an ingredient that supports joint function.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not review non-drug health products (e.g., herbals, nutraceuticals, shampoos, and other supplements) for safety or effectiveness before they are sold to the public. Manufacturers of non-drug health products must ensure their products are safe and labeled accurately. The FDA requires that these non-pharmaceuticals contain a disclaimer that says, “This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” Health Canada licenses “veterinary health products” after reviewing safety, efficacy, and manufacturing information provided by the manufacturer. These products are not tested by Health Canada.

Your veterinarian is the best source of information about the safety of non-drug health products in pets. Just because a product is natural does not mean it is safe. All medicines and medicinal plants are potentially toxic if used inappropriately or given at high doses. Supplements can also have side effects, like pharmaceuticals. Few supplements and herbs have been subjected to rigorous scientific trials to determine their efficacy.

Although the information in this handout may be helpful, it may also be incomplete and may not represent the full range of effects the supplement could have on your pet.

How is Veggiedent® given?

  • Veggiedent® comes as an oral chew to be given by mouth once daily or as directed by your veterinarian.
  • The chews are available in several different sizes. Be sure to use the appropriate size for the weight and size of your pet.
  • Pets should have an oral examination by their veterinarian before using this supplement.

This supplement can take several days to show effects within the body. Visible improvements are not always evident.

What if I miss giving my pet the supplement?

If you miss a dose of Veggiedent®, give it as soon as you remember, and then continue with the regular dosing schedule. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

Are there any potential side effects?

This supplement is usually well tolerated, and adverse reactions are uncommon at recommended doses. Be sure to supervise your pet while they are chewing Veggiedent®, to ensure they do not swallow the chew whole.

Sensitivities can develop over time, with repeated exposure. Your pet may have no reaction after the first few doses but may develop a sensitivity later. It is important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction each time this medication is used.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. Veggiedent® is a short-acting supplement that will stop working within 24 hours, although effects may be prolonged in pets with liver or kidney disease.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

Veggiedent® should NOT BE USED in:

  • pets with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to this supplement
  • pets who have not had an oral examination by their veterinarian

Veggiedent® should be USED WITH CAUTION in:

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

Make sure your veterinarian is aware of any medications (including vitamins, supplements or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking before starting any new treatment. There are no documented drug interactions with this supplement.

Is any monitoring needed with this supplement?

  • At home, monitor for any side effects such as those noted above. If any side effects occur, discontinue the supplement and contact your veterinarian.
  • Follow your veterinarian’s recommendations regarding when your pet will need to be rechecked and what tests may need to be performed before and during treatment with this supplement.

How do I store Veggiedent®?

  • Keep out of reach of children and other animals.
  • Store in the original packaging in a cool, dry place.
  • Store away from direct sunlight and heat.
