Lime Sulfur Topical

What is lime sulfur topical?

Lime sulfur topical (brand name LimePlus® Dip) is a leave-on agent used to treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm (dermatophytosis) and topical yeast infections (Malassezia dermatitis) in dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and horses.

Lime sulfur topical can also be useful in the treatment of several species of skin and fur mites and lice. In addition to its antifungal and antibacterial properties, lime sulfur acts to alleviate itchiness in affected dogs, cats, and horses.

Lime sulfur topical is used off label in exotic pet species such as chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and rodents for the control of dermatophytosis and skin mites.

Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off-label use in veterinary medicine. “Off label” means the drug is being used in a way that has not been reviewed or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Health Canada. In these instances, follow your veterinarian’s directions and cautions carefully, as they may be significantly different from those on the label.

How do I give my pet lime sulfur topical?

  • Lime sulfur topical is mainly used in a liquid dip solution format. It can also be found in therapeutic shampoos, creams, and wipes.
  • Follow the instructions of the product label, in conjunction with your veterinarian’s directions.
  • The concentrated LimePlus® Dip solution must be diluted in water prior to use on your animal.
  • Ensure that lime sulfur topical is applied in a well-ventilated area or wear a respirator-type mask to prevent inhalation of strong fumes.
  • It is recommended that you wear protective gloves during application.
  • Allow lime sulfur solution to dry naturally on the pet’s coat; do not rinse or blow dry.
  • The product is for external use on the skin only. Make sure your animal does not groom or ingest the product after application.
  • Lime sulfur may stain your animal’s hair coat and skin, as well as some surfaces and fabrics.
  • Continue using this medication for the entire time prescribed by your veterinarian, even if it appears that your pet is feeling better.

This medication takes several doses before you see any effect. The medication’s full effects may not be evident until your animal has used it consistently for several weeks; however, you should see a gradual improvement in clinical signs throughout the course of therapy.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

If you miss a dose of lime sulfur topical, give it as soon as you remember, and then continue with the regular dosing schedule. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

Are there any potential side effects from lime sulfur topical?

Lime sulfur topical may cause the following side effects:

  • irritation or dryness of skin
  • temporary staining of light-colored fur
  • hair loss on the outer ear in cats (rarely)
  • persistent odor from the medication
  • nausea and oral ulcers if accidentally ingested, particularly in cats

Toxic effects have been reported in cases where lime sulfur was improperly diluted and was exposed to a pet’s skin. Ensure that the instructions for dilution are properly followed.

Drug sensitivities can develop over time with repeated exposure. Your pet may have no reaction after the first few doses but may develop a sensitivity later. It is important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction over the entire course of treatment.
